GLASS SOUTH BEACH - MIAMI NEW CONSTRUCTION
Glass, a Pre-Construction Project in Miami Beach, is an 18-story residential tower, situated on the southern tip of Miami Beach, in the South of Fifth Street neighborhood. The building is a response to its site, context and environment (but you might already know that from the “Inspiration” page). The tower is designed to dematerialize as it rises, with its exterior almost entirely disappearing into the atmosphere due its compositional use of fritted, patterned glass. Glass reflects, captures and abstracts the natural landscape of sand, sea and sky, while retaining the essence of place through its architectural design, its materials, surface textures and tonal color.
So, not so much simple, as extremely elegant.
We could tell you that Glass is like living in a cube of water (good if you’re a fish). Or we could tell you that Glass is like living in the sky (good if you’re a bird). Or we could say that Glass is ethereal (good if you’re a ghost).
The simple truth is, Glass is designed to reflect and respond to the natural elements of the Miami skyline. It rises subtly into the sky, via the beach and waves, and merges effortlessly into its surroundings.
Which is absolutely excellent if you’re a human being.
The gradient colors of Glass shift thematically from deep to shallow water, whilst the color of the sky changes as your eye travels upward from the horizon line.
Meanwhile, inside the building, the elevator contains an interactive installation, designed by artist Ivan Toth Depeña with architect, Rene Gonzalez), which mimics the transition from water to sky.
Elsewhere, the building’s mirrored walls at each entry were put there to reflect the spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. Whilst each foyer also contains a custom ceiling combining a latex surface and a programmable lighting system designed to evoke the star-lit canopy of both urban and rural skies.
